Guide To YC (Y Combinator)

Guide To YC (Y Combinator)

$2.99

ABOUT THE BOOK This guide began as a series of personal notes to help friends and acquaintances interested in applying to Y Combinator. Its main purpose is to illuminate the YC process and to equip you with ideas and approaches to bring out the best in your application. Read it as you would peruse extended notes from a long coffee meeting – and then go use it to make your application stronger. My name is Jason Shen and I applied with two cofounders to YC’s Summer 2011 batch – we were fortunate to get in. This was my first time applying to YC, and Ridejoy is my first tech startup. I’m nontechnical, but happened to have two technical friends (and roommates) who both worked at startups. I’m aware of how lucky I am to be in this position. We got a lot of help from friends and YC alumni when preparing our application, so I wanted to make this guide to give back. Working with YC has definitely been a game-changer for me and my startup would not exist with out it. I sincerely hope that this guide leads you to a similar place, and provides you the benefits I’ve received. Disclaimer: This guide is based on solely my personal experience and judgement, conversations with YC alumni, and things that Paul Graham and other people have written and/or stated about getting into YC. Act on this advice at your own discretion – if things go well, congratulations! If things go poorly, you agree to hold me harmless (though if you’re really distraught, I might buy you a beer). MEET THE AUTHOR Jason Shen is the co-founder of Ridejoy – a Y Combinator-funded community marketplace for ridesharing. His blog, The Art of Ass-Kicking, has been featured by Lifehacker and ReadWriteWeb. Jason studied biology and philosophy at Stanford where he led the men’s gymnastics team to an NCAA national championship. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Get to the Point Fast Y Combinator received over 2,000 applications for YC in S11 and a similar number for W12. There are a total of ten partners who read the essays and YC also asks some founders for feedback, but the sheer number of applications, paired against time constraints, means the first run-through of your app is very, very short. Tedious, hand-wavey and mostly illustrative math follows: According to PG, every partner reads every app. Partners read about 700-1000 apps (after the first culling by YC alums) over a period of about 10 days. Assuming an 8 hour day with 5 minute breaks each hour means each application, on average, gets about 2 minutes of each partners time. (440mins per day / ~85 apps per day = 5.2 mins per app) The takeaway here is that you need to get to the point fast and make every answer matter. At the end of the day, nothing matters except that they say “oh shit, this team is really smart/over-the-top hardworking/resourceful/can get things done/likes each other/could successfully build a great startup.” Think constantly about how you can impress with substance, not style (unless the style is in you

Carl Martin Dual Injection Overdrive Guitar Pedal

Carl Martin Dual Injection Overdrive Guitar Pedal

$139.3

Carl took the high quality, transparent boost from the Hot Driven Boost, and put two of them into one pedal, the Dual Injection. Each boost has its own level control and True Bypass switch, plus there is another toggle which switches the Dual Injection between Serial and Parallel modes. In Serial mode, you use the Input/Output 1 on the back of the pedal and place the boost wherever you want in the signal chain. In Parallel mode, connect the Output 1 before your Drive or Preamp, and then use the Input/Output 2 on the side of the pedal to connect to your effects loop on the amp.So, what does all this do for you? Well, the Dual Injenction gives you 4 different Boost settings:1. Your normal set up either clean or with effects2. Boost 1 engaged to a desired setting3. Boost 2 engaged to a different setting than Boost 14. Both Boost 1 and Boost 2 engaged at the same timeTwo separate boosts in one that can be used individually or simultaneouslyLevel control for both boost channelsSeries/parallel mode switchTrue bypass

Carl Martin Purple Moon Fuzz Guitar Pedal

Carl Martin Purple Moon Fuzz Guitar Pedal

$114.82

After being in the Carl Martin workshop for a couple years, the Purple Moon is here with the most creative guitarists in mind. The Purple Moon is the only true bypass, all analog, dual speed Vibe with Fuzz, and it is your ticket to recreating the same classic guitar sounds  from the ’60s and ’70s that inspired Carl to design. Like the rest of the pedals in the Vintage Series, the Purple Moon features a die-cast case with its own special color, mini knobs for ease of use, high quality switching, bright visible LEDs and a choice of 9 V battery power, or suitable transformer. To begin with, the Purple Moon has been designed with extremely interactive controls which link the Vibe andFuzz. So, even though you can use the Vibe on its own by turning down the Level on the Fuzz control, you cannot actually use the Fuzz on its own. By placing the Fuzz circuit within the Vibe circuit, Carl has been able to create tonal magic, allowing you to create a clean vibe sound at two switchable speeds, a vibe sound with some fuzz way in the background, or leave the vibe in the background and max out the fuzz. In any case, the vibe is always on when the pedal is activated, and only the fuzz can be bypassed. This lets the obsessive tone gurus create their own signature sound!Combines Vibe and Fuzz tones into one incredible pedalSpeed 1, Speed 2, Depth, Level, Fuzz and Level controlsSturdy, metal housingTrue bypassPowered by 9 V battery or suitable transformer

Carl Martin Andy Timmons Signature Compressor/Limiter Guitar Pedal

Carl Martin Andy Timmons Signature Compressor/Limiter Guitar Pedal

$247.64

Just like the Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter, this unit is one of the most musically useful guitar dynamics processors on the market. The Carl Martin Andy Timmons Signature Compressor/Limiter has been developed in cooperation with Andy Timmons to create a user-friendly yet versatile compressor/limiter with its two presets.Andy Timmons, long-time user and fan of the Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter, suggested to Carl to create a Compressor/Limiter with two presets, so that he had a preset for more subtle rhythm parts, and a preset with more hard compression and sustain for other parts as solos without having to take up real-estate on the board for two Compressor/Limiters. The result is a two-preset option for Compression Rate and Level. In order to save knobs and to be as userfriendly as possible, the Threshold and Response settings are fixed for both presets, leaving the pedal with only six knobs, the Threshold and Response being 6mm miniature knobs.Andy Timmons, long-time user and fan of the Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter, suggested to Carl to create a Compressor/Limiter with two presets, so that he had a preset for more subtle rhythm parts, and a preset with more hard compression and sustain for other parts as solos without having to take up real-estate on the board for two Compressor/Limiters. Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter Pedal

Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter Pedal

$243.65

The Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter Pedal was specially developed to incorporate the same features and sonic clarity found in high-quality professional studio compressors. To achieve this Carl Martin incorporates a variable threshold, compression ratio, and attack/release controls and of course, a gain level. General Guidelines on the use of the Compressor/Limiter: Threshold: Working anti clockwise, determines how much of the signal will be compressed. This is also dependent on how much signal is fed from the instrument. Comp: Working clockwise, determines how much compression is applied to the signal allowed by the threshold setting. Resp: Working clockwise, determines the attack/release times, going from slow to fast. In general, if you want to hear the compressor working with a crisp attack you should use slow times. If you require silent limiting, you should use fast times. Gain: Working clockwise, sets the overall gain. Busy: Indicates the amount of compression being applied, even in bypass mode. The brighter it gets, the more compression is being applied. The Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter Pedal is ruggedly built by hand in Denmark.
